Wragg Austin 7 No 37.

The first time I sat in it was when it was finished.

The Inspiration Car

I chose the Wragg Austin 7 as it doesn't have to be scaled down much and I liked the lines, the original being built by men in sheds.

The Chassis

All built from scrap metal so that dictated the sizes. The chassis rails, from an old white board frame, have lightening holes on the inside flared with a home made die, mannequin stands provided the heavy steel for brackets, old motorcycle crates provided the framing for the body, an old caravan roof provided the body skin. Louvres punched with a homemade press. Fibreglass nose and rear turtle deck. A redundant covid screen provided the plexiglass for the windscreen, steering wheel from scrap ally and ply.

The Body

Aluminium hand formed over the frame, fibreglass nose and turtle deck, laid over a buck made from cellotex, 600 plus rivets holding it all together.

Running Gear & Engine choice

Lifan 212cc mikuni carb, homemade exhaust, governor removed, valve clearances set to zero. Kart hydraulic brake mated to a motorcycle rear master cylinder. No rear suspension, four link font axle the same as the Austin. Sprung with a new old stock leaf spring from FB market place re-profiled and leaves removed. 40mm rear kart axle.

How long did it take to build?

5 months, I had an articulated mannakin the same dimensions as myself to build round, the first time I sat in it was when it was finished.

What’s the least and most favourite part of the build?

I enjoyed all of it! :)

The Little details

It is pretty much faithful to the original, I still look at it and think I built that.

How does it drive?

Awesome, better than expected.

Ongoing changes and tweaks

Nothing really, just tweaking the engine to get it the best it can be within the regs.
