Lundy Flyers -1 mile of sand and 1000 smiles per hour!

Lundy Flyers Golden Mile Beach Race - Saunton Sands, North Devon. September 2022

CKGB went along to join the many wonderful Motorcycles and Hotrods to rip up the sand on Saunton Beach and what a time we had!

The Lundy Flyers Motor Club invited the CKGB to their Golden Mile Beach Race held on the 3rd and 4th of September 2022 at Saunton Sands. We hadn’t been to this event before so a couple of us went down on the Thursday to check it out and get a feel of the format. The weather held to get the tents set up at the nearby Lobbs field camping site and it was warm enough to sit outside with a beer and a microwave meal chilling out for the evening.

Friday morning was spent getting the Cyclekarts ready and doing some last minute repairs before the others were to arrive in the afternoon. We also had time to get to the beach and speak to the organisers about getting the CK’s there. Some were taken there on Friday evening to save time in the morning.

Everyone was up early Saturday morning with an eagerness to get their Cyclekarts down the beach and see what it was like to drive on. The Cyclekarts performed outstandingly on the sand had no issues with bogging down or getting stuck. The format for the day was a mixture of Cruising and 1/8 mile drag racing done in a very informal and relaxed kind of way. There was a great selection of vintage and classic bikes and cars along with their drivers/riders in period costume to really help set the scene. A cooked breakfast and lunch was provided for the participants from and old army tent and was very much appreciated with endless tea and coffee. In-between rounds we chilled and had a lot of banter with each other as we seem to do at all the events we go to.

There were quite a few spectators and some had specifically come to see the Cyclekarts which was nice. Sunday was very similar to the Saturday with only some small changes in the way things were organised. It was another spectacular day on the beach and we got to some formations on the cruises with a drone flying over taking some video footage. There are some beautiful photos and videos of this to be found on the interweb.

We packed up our stuff late afternoon and went for a beer and curry in Braunton before braving the torrential rain back to the campsite. Monday weather was dry and the last remaining of us packed away and headed home calling in a static caravan that had been converted to a café for some breakfast. Food was ok but the seats felt they were going to collapse through the floor. All in all it was an amazing weekend and the fun and laughs we had were non stop. Next year will be even better and we could camp for many more days because that is also such a joy.
