Bridlington - Race The Waves Review 2024

Our first major event of the CKGB 2024 Calendar saw a trek up North to Bridlington to Race the Waves on their marvellous South Beach. This was a new event for us, but it was worth all the effort as we mingled with an array of fantastic Hot Rods, Motorcycles and the weird and wonderful. We entertained the huge crowds that gathered all weekend with 13 Cyclekarts and we even ended up in a national newspaper!!

What a weekend! Thursday at Burton Fleming and Friday at Church Green, Bridlington were two glorious sunny days to display the Cyclekarts. We had a lot of interest from the public and other drivers and builders, and the press really appreciated our display.

Saturday was our first beach day, so with the Land Rover packed with everything including a kitchen sink, we paraded down the beach into a heavy sea fret – this was not to clear all day, so racing for the hot rods and bikes was sadly not possible, all they had was a few parade laps. This bit of poor fortune actually gave the Cyclekarts plenty of time to entertain the crowds with pursuit events and laps of an oval in the sand. Much sand was flung skywards that day and the official photographers were very keen to snap images of our antics. The day came to a close with a procession off the beach, after a few mechanical issues – two of the Cyclekarts needed to rope a wild Land Rover to escape the beach. Video evidence exists.

Sunday brought finer weather and the hot rods and motorcycles performed drags up a quarter mile of the beach. We had several runs at this too, as well as a few runs up and down in front of the strip to amuse the crowds before the others were ready. The day ended with a “Grand Depart” with all the vehicles lined up behind the Cyclekarts for the exodus of the beach. It was a spectacle to behold.

Thank you all that officiated and attended this, especially Ian Fletcher for holding my hand through all the paperwork and Granville Nixon for organising the marshals’ outfits and deputising as clerk of course. This was my first try at organising something for CKGB and I had a blast with you all, a great community.

Cleaning the Cyclekart might take a few days!
